Hey! I'm Drew.
At 16, a bout of depression had two consequential results in my life, one good...and one "tragic". The good result was the development of a lasting curiousity for philosophy and human ethics---which started with spending that year reading sartre, camus, nietzsche, hesse...etc. The second, and undeniably tragic, consequence was my ridiculous and enigmatic "born again" conversion to evangelical christianity before my 18th birthday, leading to twelve personally destructive years in anti-intellectual, anti-materialistic and anti-human fundamentalist christian churches and studies and "ministry".
During those years, I was indoctrinated with ideas that, i eventually realized, were an intrinsic affront to both logic and compassion.
Fortunately, after walking away from the christian dogma and worldview at 30, "I got better" (!)...at times slowly, but always poignantly, working my way toward intellectual, psycho-emotional and social health and happiness---mostly through the process of an autodidactic education in the realities and meaningful implications of human reason, science, history, literature, art, humor, ethics and humanistic philosophy.
I had a twenty year career in horticulture/greens-keeping. I managed a restaurant for a couple years. Since then, i've been working on rearranging my life to be able to spend it writing and promoting humanist ideals.
As a former-fundamentalist Christian, as a humanist, as a philosopher/writer/commentator, as an agnostic, as an ethical libertarian...and as a lover of life, health, truth, beauty, reason, science, history, humor, logic, love, peace and the simple pleasures of human existence, I am compelled to join the ranks of those offering "a humanist voice" to our daily dialogue.
Positive affirmations and compassionate sentiments are, or ought to be, intrinsic to a humanist philosophy of life.
In the midst of my own ramblings which will often be challenging ideas that cause harm among us---including many of those destructive ideas found within the dogma and apologetics of fundamentalist Christianity---it's my hope that my daily articulation and affirmation of the ideals of a humanist philosophy of life will reflect its potential to promote a unifying, ethical and compassionate force for common sense and peace.
Whether i write with a focus of reasoned polemic, of passionate (angry?)critique, of playful satire, of self-deprecating human confession or of sappy sentimentality...I hope the ideas I express here will reflect the simple and happy philosophy of life I've found.
I'm a humanist voice.
